the end of winter

the end of winter
the end of winter

we are at the end of the season, winter is tired, the grass is dried up, so much looks silvery-bleached. i saw it on my last walk along the edges of the big lake, and i saw it on a train trip the other day. in my planters, some tiny green tips are starting to show. no way of telling yet whether they are the bulbs i planted or simply some daredevil weeds.

p.s.: i'm thinking much about pinterest and tumblr, and whether to delete my accounts. for all the known reasons. are you thinking about this too? if so, i'd love to hear, please feel free to send me a message at twinklestar at gmx dot net, i feel as if i'm a bit stuck with my own reasoning.

I'm thinking about it, too. Well, I only have Pinterest, I don't use it much and I never make any of things I pin; I can't really justify breaching copyright by pinning things when I could just as easily bookmark the page in private. And I don't want to be liable for Pinterest's legal fees if someone decides to sue me!

thanks for your thoughts, sarah. personally, i don't really buy into everything that's circulating about these issues at the moment. not using anything commercially, linking back and crediting should make a case for fair use, but for me, there is still some uneasiness about it.

a big part of my concern is about being fair to sources. it's fairly complicated, i find.

what lets me hesitate is the fact that i draw lots of inspiration from my mood boards there. not in the sense of imitating an image or copying ideas, but in the sense of topics, aesthetics, ideas etc. it's like a visual notepad for me. the question is: does it belong in that particular arena, or should it be a totally private affair?

I don't have accounts on tumblr or pinterest but I think about deleting other accounts (e.g. deviantart), too. This is because I think it becomes a little bit of assembly line work/repetitive to maintain many accounts - I think it best for me to focus on a few places which I like and know. But I don't really know if these are your thoughts, too, or if you mean reasons like data security and such?

p.s.: i do realise that many would argue "when you put anything on the internet you implicitely acknowledge that it can be reused. if you don't want that, don't put it on the internet". i don't think i agree.

@ little pink cakes: i know what you mean. for me, it's really the discussion sarah summed up in her comment, i.e. rights issues. my position so far is: fair, non-commercial use. but it's a complex issue, both legally and "ethically", if you will.

I totally agree: fair and non-commercial. And I think one of the most important keys is: crediting...

Regarding this topic - some weeks ago I watched this video which really made me think about those copyright issues: http://www.filmmakermagazine.com/news/2012/02/must-see-kirby-fergusons-conclusion-to-everything-is-a-remix/

Maybe this is useful for your further considerations - or it (more likely) only adds to the confusion ;) In any case it's worth a look.

I deleted my pinboards….however my tumblr has only my own work and I've been using it to archive my things as I can't afford to renew my flickr pro account when it runs out. I do have another way of keep visual bookmarks for the reasons you say: topics, ideas, aesthetics etc but I keep that strictly private.

I do not agree either. Putting things out there, doesn't mean we have to accept for others to use it. As for myself, I have the highest respect towards the creativity and the work of others. Especially the idea behind Pinterest, is something I have a lot of doubts about.

less is more.
means must be subsidiary to ends and to our desire for dignity and value.
I don't want to be interesting. I want to be good.

I don't agree either.
You know, those crediting stories are crazy these days. One of my pictures has been used for a commercail brand in France & I saw it today. I became CRAZY. My name is nowhere to be seen and I guess they found the picture on pinterest or on a tumblr. And I really really think of deleting my account but I know in the same time that people will pin my pictures without my name or any link. The same thing happened to Isabelle and I was so shocked.
I don't want to put my name on a picture to be sure to have a credit you know. But I do have the impression that the blog world can be a wonderful place but also such a nasty thing...

@annton beate schmidt: i really see your point. personally, i think it' a lot about creating an awareness for issues like creativity, ideas and originality, and what they entail. i'm not against sharing, fair use, and things like creative commons. but i do believe the creators should have more of a say, should definitely have a veto. a culture of respect needs to be created.

@marion: i'm very sorry to hear. it just goes to show that we need certain fair rules, which shouldn't be business driven but artist driven, if you ask me. i think we should always fully credit when we pin other people's work, and should expect others to credit us. often, i think, people are a bit too lazy researching sources, to be quite honest, and i think everybody should take those five minutes it takes. by the way: i've heard about skripts that make it impossible for images to be pinned or tumblrd, but of course that means stepping out of the sharing arena altogether.

I deleted my Pinterest a couple of weeks ago. Over 4000 pins!! That was some serious pinning, but I felt I wasn’t really getting anything from it and that I should channel my time spent pinning/repinning into something more productive! It was quite hard to do, but I can honestly say, I don’t miss it at all. It’s a tough one though! Have a lovely weekend :)

Hi Kristina, I'm puzzled now. I've seen some of my stuff on Pinterest not linked back to me or worst in folders called DIY, or ideas for crochet etc: that made me really depressed. Anyway the pinterest/tumblr debate is interesting BUT as I can see from my stats people anyway take your images from your blog and have no problems on be "heavily" inspired from the thing you make and happily re-sellthem as their creations without even mention that they where (heavily) inspired by this or that artist/crafter/photographer. What can I say? It's a lost battle, where is the line between been inspired as you described it and be "heavily" inspired (literally stealing someone else work changing just few details). That is the trend lately be "heavily" inspired as if the word copying became politically incorrect maybe it's human nature and in my case I only really started to noticed thanks to Pinterest ( Ha, the irony!).

were I to be true to form, I would have used the original plural form "detail" rather than the colloquial one. getting there, though ;)

I just deleted my Pinterest account. I realized that I too often didn't pin from the original source, which isn't fair. I mostly used Pinterest for inspiration anyway - looking at others' pins. And I can still do that, right?
